Home Brewing - batch #1

Thanks to Rich at www.brew-wine.com in East Hartford, I purchased a great home brew kit and the necessary utensils. With Rich's coaching and my family's help, We brewed 5 gallons of Amber beer last night. We had some hiccups (pun intended) along the way (Who would have thought that wort can take an hour to cool?), and the bubbles in the airlock bear witness to the batch now happily fermenting in my basement.

Having added words such as wort, airlocks and immersion chillers to my vocabularythis week, I am ready to enter the hobby of home brewing.

I am amazed at how fast you can learn a new hobby these days. Within 3 days I have learned everything I need to know to get started home brewing thanks to you tube, articles on internet sites and Rich at www.brew-wine.com. (Seems to me that some of the you tube videos on home brewing appear to be made by people who have been drinking too much backyard moonshine.)

Contrast this experience with 30 years ago. I remember when I started reloading my own ammunition, how slow the learning curve was. Before the Internet, I learned from reloading books that were hard to obtain and from experienced reloaders. It was painfully slow to meet with people, then apply the skills myself and to sort through bad advice to get the good advice. It took a few months before I was self-sufficient and a few years before I mastered the hobby.

The world is definitely turning faster than it was 30 years ago. And I love it. I wonder if anyone would pay for a metric of "How fast you can learn a new hobby?"
