This past week, between Christmas 2011 and New Year, was very relaxing for me. I had time to reflect on the past, dream about the future and sleep late in the present.
Although it is cold and dark most of the time here in Connecticut, my mood improved with the opportunity to relax this past week. Thus giving rise to opportunity to identify some recent good things in life.
1. After Winter Storm Alfred in October, we were without power for a week. Obviously, Connecticut Light and Power are on the hook to make good with customers, as much as possible. However, I feel that no other service provider owes me anything. I don't expect the gas station to give me a free tank of gas because I was not able to fill up during the power outage. I don't expect the cable company to credit me for not having power to watch their TV stations. Yet, Cox Communications gave me a credit for the time we were without power. Kudos to Cox Communications. I am a delighted customer because of this goodwill gesture. (Of course, CT L&P are still working on the credit while Cox has already applied it - enough said).
2. I took my CR-V in for an oil change and safety recall. As always, Manchester Honda provide outstanding service. I regret the days I drove a Dodge and Ford, when the dealers had the attitude of "You bought this piece of trash. Now, we can treat you like dirt because you owe us." Why would anyone put up with a Ford or Dodge dealer attitude when you have the option of servicing at Manchester Honda?
3. Watched "Midnight in Paris" on DVD from Redbox last night. Fabulous movie. It was so enjoyable to watch a movie that doesn't need sex, canned laughter and a politician to pass as "reality". If you watch nothing else, see "Midnight in Paris". I can't emphasize enough how mentally stimulating and unpredictable this movie is.
4. Another great service I had this week was with 1and1.com I had a question on my domain name bill, and received an email to call them. I thought "Here we go on another hour of 'Choose option 1 for stupidity, choose option 2 to find out what you already know, make a choice soon or we will disconnect you." Instead, within six minutes I had spoken to Peter in the billing department, he corrected the issue and we went on our way. (It would have been four minutes, but I had to look up information.) Kudos to 1and1.com. Guess who I will do business with again.
5. As usual, my favorite hobby shop - Brew and Wine Hobby in East Hartford, CT, provide the best customer service in the world for creators of hand crafted beer. On Thursday I took a sample of my latest Oatmeal Stout in for Rich to give feedback. He smelled, tasted, and advised me to increase mash temperature, reduce mash thickness and add water salts. Where else can you go to get this valuable information? If you live in the Hartford area, you need to visit Brew and Wine Hobby in East Hartford so that you can also make better beer and wine.
On the final day of 2011, I wish everyone a happy and safe New Year's celebration. I hope that you have a prosperous 2012, fully realizing that we will experience loss of loved ones, more cancer treatments, good and bad times. My advice is "Do the best you can, don't beat yourself up for your perceived failures and shortcomings."
